I used to work with auto insurance agents and had to negotiate coverage from time to time. From those experiences, my top three skills would be active listening, critical thinking and being able to build strong rapports. When I think negotiating with others, my thought is not how I can get what I want, but how both parties can benefit which is why active listening and critical thinking is important. By listening to what the other party wants or needs, I could come up with the best solution for both of us with critical thinking. This then can lead to building strong rapports with the other party. Building that trust makes future negotiations easier with minimal arguments.
